![]() ![]() One second we're happy-go-lucky teens with the world at our feet to wondering if the next world war is going to start. Glitter gels were all the rage, "my parents don't understand me" was hugely popular in the music scene, Baggy JNCOs, bandana shirts, layered accessories, flared pants (I miss those, in between bell bottoms & bootcut)ĩ/11 flipped a switch though. We were told we could be anything we wanted. Now he's a real estate broker and I can tell he hates it. He's turning 44 this year and he says the new technology from 1999 to 2010 ruined his 20s. They didn't have Facebook or instagram to brag about things, you had to be in the moment, and sometime you never get that moment was how he tried to explain it to me. We didn't speak from when I was about 15 to about August of last year, and he opened up about how he wasn't happy at all despite all the cool and latest gadgets he had. Only a lot later, 5 or 6 years later, I realized my brother was smoking a shit ton of weed and severely depressed. He'd pick me up from school at lunch and hit up pizza hut for a personal pan pizza in his cool car, with his frosted tips, playing limp bizkit or coolio. To me, that was what life looked like and what I aspired to be like. He had an eagle talon (still me favorite car), a pager, worked at a store for speaker systems, a girlfriend. His room had a huge Sony bravia, playstation, cool car posters. I was like 7 or 8 but my brother was 13 years older than me and I idolized him. I remember watching things like the Friends finale or Survivor with a group of 20 people. So you ended up making plans to watch a show together. Even PVRs were nascent, most young people couldn’t afford them. Some popular shows and movies you could pirate but it was an arduous process. Even a few years earlier, it was landlines or bust.ĮDIT: Oh, and watch tv was a much more communal experience. What’s interesting is that this seems quaint now, but at the time we all thought it was crazy to be this connected to people. Heck, I remember regularly sending a message to a friend on ICQ or MSN Messenger saying “We’re going to X bar around 9:30.” You assume they got the message. You would swing by just to watch tv or chat. Everyone had that one friend you wanted to kill for seconding multiple short texts instead of one long one, costing you 10 cents each time.Īs a result of this, you tended to have more unstructured plans with friends. Most texts or calls were to plan meeting up in person so you could actually talk. Not everyone had a cellphone, and since most people who did were on plans with text and minute limits, you kept it brief.
